Tuesday, May 31st, 2011: Ring of Kerry: Derrynane Strand & House and Abbey Island

Our 3rd, 4th and 5th stops were all very close. We drove up to Derrynane and had lunch on the beach, i.e. Derrynane Strand. Then we walked over to the abbey on Abbey Island. This was easy because the tide was out. Unfortunately the tide came back in while we were on the island and our path back was a bit more difficult. Alexandra really used her rock climbing skills to show us the way and stay dry.

The Abbey is very ruined.  It contained mainly graves, including Mary O'Connell's grave (who was the wife Daniel O'Connell).  The  arched windows over look the sea.

Then we nipped over to Derrynane House where Daniel "The Liberator" O'Connell lived for a portion of his life. It was a nice little house that taught us all about Daniel O'Connell. He was a pacifist who wanted Ireland to be free from English rule. He severed several years in jail and when he was released the common people made a carriage for him to return home in. We saw the carriage before getting back in the car to find ice cream.
