Saturday, February 12th, 2011: Chocolate Bread and Nottingham

Brian slept through the night so he got Chocolate bread for breakfast!!!!

After breakfast we headed off to Nottingham, home of Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest (although we did not see the forest or much of the Robinhood theme.

We started with the caves.  Nottingham is famous for its man-made caves.  We found the cave in the mall and learned all about how and why the caves were made. They were used for all sorts of things:

tannery, brewing beer, air-raid shelters, and homes. Many caves were under peoples houses and still have not been discovered. Here are some pictures of the kids in the cave:

Then we had lunch at Ye Olde Jerusalem, the oldest pub in England! It was built in a cave.

Then we explored Nottingham Castle. It was a nice museum. The best part was the basement dress-up area. Then we went off to the Brewyard museum. It was a great museum! Too bad they closed 30 minutes after we got there and they ushered us out. We were thinking of going to Woolation House but figured we would never make it in time before it closed as everything seemed to be closing earlier than we expected. So off to the high street to Marks and Spenser for snacks. Then we determined that we could run to catch an earlier train home. So off we went.

Here are 2 pictures of the kids playing dress-up at the castle.

I will say that there was not history readily available to read about Nottingham. Of course that could be that my kids wouldn’t let me read what was available. Also there was very little on the Robin Hood theme. I thought they would have played that up a little bit more.
